Frequent users of the main summit trail at Howard Buford Recreation Area (Mt. Pisgah) will see major improvements to a significant section of Trail 1 this week.

trail damageThe trail was damaged by heavy runoff after the snow storm and April flooding earlier this year. The repairs will smooth the trail bed and increase the number of “rolling dips” that help direct runoff to the side of the trail and prevent the trail itself from being inundated.

As a result of the repairs, the West Trailhead, Trail 1, and multiple feeder trails will be closed Tuesday–Thursday this week from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day. There are alternate routes that can be used to reach the summit from the North and East trailheads during the closure.

“We know that our visitors will be thrilled at the improvements to the most popular trail in the park,” said Lane County Parks Manager Brett Henry. “The trail closures will occur over three days and are critical to the safety and efficiency of the repair process, so we ask folks to be patient and explore other trails during that time.”

The repair work is being conducted by Bonneville Power Administration, which maintains the lower two-thirds of Trail 1 as a maintenance access road for its Santiam-Alvey transmission line. Lane County Parks is working with Friends of Buford Park and Mt. Pisgah, as well as the Mount Pisgah Arboretum to manage these temporary trail closures.
