Posted on 03/01/2019
In an effort to address some of the most pressing public health issues facing Lane County, Lane County Public Health in partnership with PeaceHealth is hosting a free community “fireside chat” with the 19th Surgeon General of the United States, Dr. Vivek Murthy, on Wednesday, March 6, from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. in the Valley River Inn’s Willamette Ballroom. The event will begin with a conversation between a moderator and Dr. Murthy, followed by a question and answer portion with the audience.

“The opportunity to involve our community in a solution-oriented conversation with an individual who has looked across our nation’s recent health victories, and helped move the needle on our health challenges, is absolutely invaluable,” said Lane County Senior Health Officer, Dr. Patrick Luedtke.

Dr. Murthy served under President Barack Obama from December 2014 to April 2017. As America’s Doctor, he created initiatives to tackle our country’s most urgent public health issues, including the impact of alcohol and drugs on health; the opioid crisis; e-cigarettes and youth; and creating walkable communities. In 2017, he focused his attention of chronic stress and isolation as problems that have profound implications for health, productivity and happiness.

As Vice Admiral of the Public Health Commissioned Corps, Dr. Murthy commanded a uniformed service of 6,600 public health officers focused on helping the most underserved and vulnerable populations in more than 800 locations in the United States and abroad.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for our community to hear from one of the country’s preeminent public health experts,” said Lee Rodgers, MD, interim chief medical officer for PeaceHealth’s Oregon Network. “Dr. Murthy is known as an innovative thinker and engaging speaker who brings fresh ideas for tackling our most difficult health-care challenges.”

The event is free and open to all, but attendees are asked to preregister online. For more information or to register, please visit the following link: [NB: registration ended on March 7]

The event will be from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m., with doors opening at 3:30 p.m. Valley River Inn is located at 1000 Valley River Way, Eugene, OR, 97401.
