Vampirate Marriage Ceremonies Set Sail This Halloween!


Lane County Clerk’s Office is hosting spooky ‘scaremonies’ for couples looking to tie the knot with a twist

There are 15 time slots available on a first-come, first-served basis. Ceremonies will be held in 20-minute intervals from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Friday, October 31st, at the Public Service Building, 125 E 8th Ave, Eugene.

To schedule a Scaremony, couples must first get a valid marriage license.
The license must be purchased before booking your ceremony.

Marriage licenses are available from the County Clerk’s Office – Deeds and Records Department (125 E 8th Ave).

You must:

  1. Fill out the online Marriage License Application
  2. Visit the Clerk’s Office at least three days before your ceremony to finish the process

If your license is from another county, you may still bring it to your Scaremony. It is your responsibility to bring it with you.

How to Get a Marriage License

Steps to Apply: 

  1. Fill out the online Marriage License Application form before coming into our office.
    • Enter all information accurately.
    • Make sure names, birthplaces, dates of birth, and parent's names match your birth certificate exactly.
    • Birth certificates are recommended but not required. They help ensure your information is correct. You may bring the original document or a photo of it to use as a reference. 
  2. Visit our office at least 3-days before your ceremony.
    • Both parties must appear in person to review and sign the license. 
  3. A nonrefundable payment is due at the time the license is issued.
  4. Review your physical marriage license and the information packet you receive at the time of issuance. 

Marriage licenses become effective three days after being signed.  They are valid for 60 days beginning on the effective date.

ge Requirement

You must be 18 years or older to marry in Oregon
A 17-year-old may marry with the consent of a parent or guardian. Consent forms are available in our office. 



Three (3) Day Waiting Period

Regardless of whether you submit your marriage license application form online or complete it in our office, both parties
 must visit our office at least 3 days prior to your marriage ceremony in order to complete the application process. 

The 3-day waiting period may be waived by the County Clerk for a good and sufficient reason. (A good and sufficient reason is defined as specific ground for taking any action relative to the situation.  This action will be rational and shall not be arbitrary or capricious).  The fee for the waiver is $10.00 and the license fee and waiver must be paid in cash.



Legal Names Taken


Each person in the marriage must select their legal name after the marriage. More information about 
name changes.



Where Your License Can be Used

Licenses issued by Lane County can only be used for ceremonies conducted within Oregon.

 


Officiants

  • Officiants must follow Oregon law (ORS 106.120)
  • They do not need to register with the County
  • It is the officiants responsibility to fill out your license correctly
  • We do not provide referrals for officiants; you are responsible for finding your own officiant. 



Medical Examinations

Medical examinations and blood tests are not required.

Application Requirements

When applying for a marriage license, the following information is required for each person applying:

Address

Father's Name

Father's place of birth

Date of Birth

Mother's Maiden Name

Mother's place of birth

Place of Birth


If either party has been married before, you will need to know the year the previous marriage ended.


Birth certificates are highly recommended, but not required, when filling out the application and when purchasing the marriage license. 

Civil Marriage Ceremonies

Civil Ceremonies will be performed most Fridays. To schedule, call 541-682-3654 or visit Lane County Deeds & Records Monday through Friday, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. We are located in the Public Service Building on the corner of 8th Avenue and Pearl Street.



A Civil Ceremony is a legal function of the County Clerk’s office to solemnize marriages. In Oregon, a ceremony of some kind is required to make your marriage official. A Civil Ceremony is a low-cost, secular option.

  • Fees: The fee for a Civil Ceremony at the Clerk’s Office is $117. Payment is due at the time of scheduling and is non-refundable. We accept cash, check, money order, or credit card (with a 3% processing fee).
  • Timing: Each ceremony is given a 45-minute time slot. This includes time to finalize your license paperwork, and have the Clerk solemnize your marriage. If you are more than fifteen (15) minutes late, your ceremony may be canceled. We are unable to delay your ceremony to accommodate late guests.

     

  • Witnesses: You must bring 2 witnesses for your ceremony.

     

  • Guests: You may have up to 10 guests attend your ceremony. 

     

  • Marriage License: You must have a valid marriage license that is effective on the date of your ceremony. If you obtained your license from another county, you must bring it with you to your ceremony appointment.

    • A ceremony appointment cannot be scheduled until a marriage license has been purchased.   

       

  • Cancelations: If you cancel or miss your appointment, your fee is non-refundable.

Ordering a Certified Copy of Your Marriage License

A certified copy of your marriage license will be required to show your legal name and relationship status after marriage. If you ordered a certified copy at the time you applied for your license, one will automatically be mailed to you once your license is returned to our office after your ceremony.

You may also purchase a certified copy of your Lane County marriage license in person at our office or by mail. To purchase a certified copy of a Lane County marriage license by mail, complete and print the Request for Certified Copy of Marriage License. Mail the form to our office along with a check for $7.75 for the first certified copy, plus $4 for each additional certified copy. Make checks payable to: Lane County Deeds and Records.  The certified copy or copies will be returned to you by mail. 

If the marriage license was issued by another Oregon county, contact that county to order, or order from the State of Oregon's Center for Health Statistics.
