2024 Chip Seal

Lane County will be chip sealing roads in several areas from July to September. Chip seal is a pavement preservation treatment composed of a thin layer of liquid asphalt applied to the existing road surface, followed immediately by a layer of crushed and compacted rock. After the chip seal has set for a few days, a final topcoat (fog seal) will be applied to seal the asphalt and rock mixture. This process is widely used to increase the durability and lifespan of rural roads.

Crews may be working in the chip seal areas this spring to make culvert repairs or replacements, crack seal, patch asphalt and do other work ahead of chip seal operations.

DO

  • Expect up to 20-minute delays during chip seal.

  • Drive slowly between chip seal and fog seal application to avoid kicking up loose rock and damaging the road surface.

DON'T FORGET

  • To check TripCheck.com starting in early July for weekly location updates.

  • The road surface will resemble a gravel road until after the application of fog seal; expect loose rock, especially along road shoulders.
