Medical Chaperones

Starting July 1, 2023, the Oregon Medical Board requires all health care providers to offer patients a medical chaperone to be present in the exam room during a sensitive exam. Sensitive visits include any examinations, treatments, or procedure of the genitals, rectum, or breasts.

At Community Health Centers of Lane County, we want you to be comfortable during all exams and procedures. We have trained chaperones to make sure sensitive exams and procedures are done in a safe, comfortable and professional way.

A medical chaperone is trained to know what to expect during an exam and is there to ensure patient and provider safety. The chaperone cannot be a personal friend or relative of the patient.

You may choose to decline to have a chaperone present. Please speak with your health care provider if you have questions about a sensitive exam or the use of a medical chaperone.

Reproductive Health

Family Planning Photo
Community Health Centers of Lane County participates in the Oregon Reproductive Health Program making reproductive health exams and contraceptive supplies available for free or low-cost.  We can send a prescription for birth control to your pharmacy and we also stock a variety of options in our clinics, such as multiple types of birth control pills, long acting reversible contraceptives like IUDs and implants, the patch, the ring, and condoms. Well-woman exams, cancer screening and prevention, STI testing and treatment, and pregnancy testing are also offered at all of our locations.  Prevention is a cornerstone of our services and our providers and nurses are trained to offer patient-centered information on preventing unplanned pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections.

There have been recent changes to the Title X program at the national level. Title X is a source of federal funding for reproductive health care to people with low incomes. These changes do not impact our services or your ability to receive reproductive health care. Our clinic is no longer receiving Title X funds to pay for reproductive health services. Clients seeking care at our clinics will continue to receive the same high-quality, client-centered reproductive health services that have always been available.

Dental Prevention Program

l PhotoDental Photo

The Dental Prevention Program serves children in Head Start, Early Head Start,  Preschool Promise, Relief Nursery, elementary and middle schools throughout Lane County. Onsite prevention clinics with portable equipment are set up onsite at all participating schools. These clinics offer dental hygiene assessments, teeth cleaning, fluoride varnish treatments, sealants, and education. Homecare packets include toothbrushes, toothpaste, and floss. Services are provided twice a year.

The goals and objectives of the Dental Prevention Program are:

  • To establish dental homes
  • To achieve HealthyPeople 2020 oral health goals by reducing the proportion of children with untreated decay, in primary and permanent teeth, increase the number of children with sealants in permanent molars, and reduce the overall incidence of decay.
  • To reach the American Academy of Pediatrics and American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry goal of having first dental check up by eruption of first tooth or by one year of age.

Why provide dental prevention services to children?

  • 51 million school hours are lost each year due to dental disease. Healthy children learn better.
  • “On any given day, more than 5,000 children in Oregon are in school and suffering from dental pain or infection.” Oregon Department of Human Services, Oregon Smile Survey 2007.
  • Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends school-based and school-linked sealant programs to reduce prevalence of dental disease. Cavities are a bacterial infection that may be prevented by sealants. Sealants seal out the germs that cause cavities in molars where 85% of dental disease occurs.
  • Cavities are the #1 chronic, infectious disease among children according to David Satcher, Oral Health in America: A Report of the Surgeon General, May 25, 2000.

Why is cavity prevention important?

  • Dental infection affects heart, lungs, and general health.
  • Dental disease is costly to restore, and may result in tooth loss.
  • Cavities may affect speech development and learning. Establishing healthy dental care habits leads to a lifetime of better health.

What is Integrated Oral Health?

Integrated Oral Health is a dental prevention program that focuses on the link between a person’s oral health and systemic health. Our goal is to treat the whole person, starting with the mouth but not omitting its critical role on the rest of the body and vice versa. Our program serves adults with diabetes and children ages 0-14. We operate on site at the Charnelton Community Clinic in Eugene and the RiverStone Clinic in Springfield, offering a host of preventative dental hygiene services that include: dental hygiene assessments, dental referrals, pediatric teeth cleanings, fluoride varnish treatments, and oral hygiene instruction. Our future goals include expanding upon our services, and the populations we serve.

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an effective form of health care that has evolved into a complete and holistic medical system. Practitioners of acupuncture have used this noninvasive medical system to diagnose and help millions of people get well and stay healthy.

An acupuncturist will place fine, sterile needles at specific acupoints on the body. This activates the body’s Qi (pronounced “chee”) and promotes natural healing by enhancing recuperative power, immunity and physical and emotional health. It can also improve overall function and well-being. It is a safe, painless and effective way to treat a wide variety of medical problems.

What will my acupuncturist do?

During the initial exam a brief health history may be taken. Questions will be asked regarding symptoms, health and lifestyle. Your acupuncturist also may check your pulse and tongue and may conduct a physical exam.  This information is then organized to create a complete, accurate and comprehensive diagnosis of where Qi has been blocked or imbalanced. After the interview process, you may receive an acupuncture treatment. Visits  with your acupuncturist may last from thirty to ninety minutes.

How should I prepare?

  • Write down and bring any questions you have, We are here to help you.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing for easy access to acupuncture points.
  • Do not eat large meals just before or after your visit.
  • Refrain from overexertion, working out, drug or alcohol for up to six hours after the visit.
  • Avoid stressful situations. Make time to relax and be sure to get plenty of rest.
  • Between visits, make mote of any changes that may have occurred, such as the alleviation of pain, pain moving to other areas, or changes in the frequency and type of symptoms.

How safe is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is extremely safe. It is an all-natural, drug-free therapy, yielding no negative side effects, just feelings of relaxation and well-being. There is little danger of infection from acupuncture needles because they are sterile, used once and then discarded.

Acupuncture and Migraines

A study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that traditional Chinese acupuncture as well as Yamamoto new scalp acupuncture significantly decreased patients’ migraine frequency and severity. The study involved 80 patients who suffer from migraine headaches and concluded that participants had improvement in their ability to do daily activities after treatment.

Acupuncture and Fibromyalgia

A study showed that acupuncture , when added to traditional fibromyalgia treatments, reduces pain  and improves the quality of life for up to three months following treatment.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us.

Mindfulness can be very beneficial for stress, anxiety and depression reduction and can help us to be present and allow thoughts and emotions to come without judgment.

  • Anyone can do it. Mindfulness practices cultivates universal human qualities and does not require anyone to change their beliefs. Everyone can benefit and it’s easy to learn.
  • It’s a way of living. Mindfulness is more than just a practice, It brings awareness and caring into everything we do—and it cuts down needless stress. Even a little makes oar lives better.
  • It’s evidence-based. We don’t have to take mindfulness on faith. Both science and experience demonstrate its positive benefits for our health, happiness, work and relationships.
  • It sparks innovation. As we deal with our world’s increasing complexity and uncertainty, mindfulness can lead us to effective, resilient, low-cost responses to seemingly intransigent problems.
