The U.S. Department of Transportation (US DOT) is the federal body overseeing transportation policy, programs, and funding. Branches include the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA, pronounced "Nitsa").
The current transportation bill is the Fixing America's Surface Transportation (FAST) Act, establishing $305 billion over the next five years. The source of this funding is a mix of Highway Trust Funds and General Funds. Programs funded include the Local Bridge Program, the Federal Lands Access Program (FLAP), the State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP), and the Surface Transportation Program (STP) Working Agreement -- which includes STP-Urban distributed through the Metropolitan Planning Organization and STP-Rural allocated directly to Lane County.
