If you have a gun purchase that is in the pending status with the Oregon State Police Firearms Background Unit, the Lane County Sheriff’s Office cannot assist you in this process. All inquiries must be made through the Oregon State Police Challenge Line.
The rules that govern the Oregon FICS (Firearms Instant Check System) to approve a gun sale is different than the Oregon Revised Statutes that govern the issuance (denial and revocation) of a concealed handgun license. A person can qualify for a concealed handgun license and be disqualified from purchasing a firearm or be able to purchase a firearm but not qualify for a concealed handgun license.
Some criminal history entries are not complete and often times show an arrest with no disposition, so the Oregon State FICS Unit must contact courts and police agencies across the United States for dispositions and police agencies for copies of reports to determine your eligibility to purchase a firearm. This takes time, and while frustrating, there is nothing that the Sheriff’s Office can do on your behalf to speed up the process – you must contact the Oregon State Police FICS Challenge Line for information or updates on your gun purchase.
