Celebrating Mental Health Awareness Month

Celebrating Mental Health Awareness Month
Posted on 05/07/2019
To mark National Mental Health Awareness Month, Lane County Public Health is encouraging all community members to take a moment each day to support their mental health with the Mind Your Mind campaign. The Mind Your Mind campaign was developed as a way to help encourage the people of Lane County to treat their mental health with same attention to preventative care as one would with their physical preventative care.

“Caring for our mental and emotional well-being is just as important to our overall health as caring for our bodies,” said Lane County Suicide Prevention Coordinator, Roger Brubaker. “Just like physical health conditions, most mental illnesses are both preventable and treatable which means that developing healthy skills today can have lifetime benefits."

Positive mental health allows people to realize their full potential, cope with stress, work productively and make meaningful contributions to their families and communities. It’s also important for community members to know that help is available and effective for those experiencing a mental illness.

Here in Lane County, roughly one out of three people experience some kind of mental health condition, but few feel that others are supportive to people in distress. If you or a loved one is struggling with a mental health condition, don’t hesitate to have a conversation about it with a medical provider, loved one or trusted friend who can help.
