The
Week Without Driving Challenge is a national challenge originally launched in 2021 by Disability Rights Washington. Now the Challenge extends nationwide and includes many advocates and individuals outside Washington state, as well as national, state, and local partners.
The 2024 Week Without Driving Challenge is Monday, September 30th, through Sunday, October 6th, 2024. The Challenge encourages people who drive to spend a week relying on walking, rolling, transit, and asking for rides. If people do drive, they are asked to take the opportunity to reflect on the challenges faced by people who do not have the option of driving.
Nearly a third of people living in the United States (including people with disabilities, young people, seniors, and people who can’t afford cars or gas) are nondrivers and must navigate transportation challenges every day. This can be particularly challenging in rural areas. This is an opportunity to learn about the barriers and challenges that nondrivers face, to empathize with those experiences, and to consider how transportation systems could be improved for nondrivers in our local communities.
The Public Health Advisory Committee, along with staff in Public Works and Public Health, encourage Lane County community members to participate in the Week Without Driving Challenge. For more information and to join the Week Without Driving Challenge, please see the website -
