WIC is open during the government shutdown

What is a government shutdown?

A government shutdown is when U.S. Congress doesn’t pass laws needed to fund government agencies and operations. When a government shutdown happens, services that Congress considers “non-essential” may sometimes stop because there is no money for them. The longest ever government shutdown lasted just over a month. Sometimes, they only lasted a few hours.

How could a government shutdown affect WIC?

While the U.S. government funds WIC, we know that Oregon WIC will operate as usual through mid-October. We hope that the government shutdown ends before then, and that there will be no interruptions to benefits. If the government shutdown continues past mid-October, we will keep participants updated about what that means for their benefits.

For now, please keep appointments and use benefits as you normally would.

Can I still apply for WIC?

Yes, we are still booking appointments. It’s important to apply right away because it can take a few weeks to complete the process. You can apply using this online interest form.

Will my benefit card still work (eWIC)?

Your benefit card will continue working normally through mid-October. If the government shutdown ends before mid-October, your benefits will continue working as normal. If needed, we will share further updates after mid-October.

Can I still drop in to WIC locations if needed?

Our WIC locations will be open during regularly scheduled business hours, which can differ depending on location. See our WIC locations and hours page for specific details.

Should I keep my appointments during a shutdown?

s! We need all families to keep all of their appointments so services can continue uninterrupted.

WIC is a long-standing program that is still here for you.

What resources are available if WIC benefits are paused?

We hope this won’t happen. But if it does, call 211 or visit Food for Lane County to find support near you.

The Lane County WIC Program is a Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for qualifying families. If you are pregnant, nursing, or caring for a child under the age of five, you may qualify. WIC is here to help you have a healthy and thriving family. We offer helpful nutrition education, lactation support, and healthy foods.
